10 EVERYDAY WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR VEHICLE

Vehicle security starts with consistently taking sensible precautions.
There is no single action that can prevent every type of vehicle crime, but making security part of your everyday routine can help reduce opportunities for theft.
From securing your keys to considering where you park, a combination of simple measures can make your vehicle a less attractive target.
01
Always Lock and Check Your Vehicle
Make locking your vehicle a habit, even when leaving it unattended for only a short time or when it is parked at home. Close all windows and the sunroof, lock the doors and physically check that the vehicle has secured properly before walking away.
03
Protect Against Keyless Theft
If your vehicle uses keyless entry or keyless starting, take additional precautions to reduce the risk of criminals capturing or relaying the signal from your key. Store keys away from the exterior of your home and consider using a suitable signal-blocking pouch or container. Check periodically that it is still effectively blocking the key's signal.
05
Park with Security in Mind
When away from home, choose where you park carefully. Where possible, use busy, well-lit locations where the vehicle is overlooked or covered by CCTV. When using public car parks, consider facilities with controlled access, regular staff presence or recognised security measures.
07
Protect Vulnerable Parts of Your Vehicle
Vehicle crime does not always involve stealing the entire vehicle. Wheels, number plates, catalytic converters and other components can also be targeted. Be aware of components that may be particularly vulnerable on your vehicle and take appropriate precautions to make theft more difficult.
09
Never Leave Your Vehicle Running Unattended
Never leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running or the keys inside, even for a short period. This is particularly important when warming or defrosting a vehicle in cold weather. If you need to leave the vehicle, switch off the engine, take the keys and secure it properly.
02
Keep Your Keys Secure
Store your keys, including any spares, somewhere secure and out of sight. Avoid leaving them close to doors, windows or letterboxes where they may be accessible from outside. Keep all sets of keys equally secure, including those that are rarely used.
04
Secure Where You Park at Home
Consider the security of the area where your vehicle is normally kept. Garages should be properly secured, with doors, windows and other access points kept locked. For vehicles parked on a driveway, measures such as gates, lighting, CCTV and other access controls can help make the vehicle and surrounding area less accessible to thieves.
06
Keep Valuables Out of Sight
Avoid leaving bags, electronic devices, tools, money or other desirable items visible inside your vehicle. Where practical, remove valuables completely rather than simply hiding them elsewhere in the vehicle. Even relatively low-value items can provide a reason for someone to break in.
08
Keep Vehicle Documents Secure
Avoid routinely storing important vehicle documents inside the vehicle. Documents containing ownership, registration, insurance or personal information should be kept securely elsewhere wherever possible. If the vehicle is stolen or broken into, leaving these documents inside can provide a thief with additional information about you and the vehicle.
